What Do Switching Operations Entail?

Thomas McGrath was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. He graduated magna cum laude from Florida International University in Miami, Florida, with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, and earned Certificates in both National Security Studies and Entrepreneurship. In 2025, Thomas received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, Davis, and was admitted to the bar in California.
Over the course of his law school career, Thomas participated in the UC Davis School of Law Labor Law Practicum to develop a theoretical and practical understanding of the labor movement and the ways in which lawyers support and interact with unions. He clerked for the Hon. Judge James T. Chou of the Marin County Superior Court; appeared on the record for the Solano County District Attorney’s Office as a certified law student in Superior Court in both felony and misdemeanor criminal matters; and completed an internship with Hildebrand McLeod & Nelson, which provided him firsthand exposure to railroad-related litigation and led to him joining the firm after graduation.
Prior to earning his undergraduate degree, he followed in his father’s footsteps working as a professional railroader. After more than fifteen years as a locomotive engineer and conductor, he left the railroad to begin his educational journey, which culminated with the earning of his Juris Doctor. Thomas is thrilled to return to the world of railroading as an advocate for his railroad brothers and sisters.
